Ulrich Burdack (DE)
Music
2026

What can be more fab than having a rumbling classical bass letting us experience up close and personal what human voice can trigger in your hearts? Makes us giddy with anticipation to welcome Ulrich back in the town where his whole career had a start...
The bass Ulrich Burdack was born in 1982 and grew up in Kiel.
Ulrich has a special connection to Tallinn, as his hometown of Kiel is Tallinn's twin city in Germany: His very first performance as a singer was actually a performance of the Christmas Oratorio in the Estonia Concert Hall in the Estonian capital on December 8, 1991, with the Kiel Boys' Choir. He traveled to Tallinn with his school choir for the Üldlaulupidu festival in 1999, and his singing took him there two more times.
He began singing in the Kiel Boys' Choir and initially pursued musicological studies in his hometown, but in 2003 switched to Weimar to study singing. After a masterclass with Brigitte Fassbaender, she engaged Ulrich Burdack at the Tiroler Landestheater (Tyrolean State Theatre) in Innsbruck. Further engagements as a permanent ensemble member followed in Kiel, Halle, Gera, and Bremerhaven, where Ulrich Burdack developed a considerable opera repertoire, never shying away from genre boundaries.
Besides such serious roles as Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Banco (Macbeth), Water-Gnome (Rusalka), and Timur (Turandot), he also performed in comic roles such as Osmin (The Abduction from the Seraglio), Don Pasquale, and Kecal (The Bartered Bride). He also impressed audiences in musical theatre, portraying Alfred Doolittle (My Fair Lady), Molokov (Chess), DeMille (Sunset Boulevard), and Edna Turnblad (Hairspray).
Since 2025, Ulrich has pursued his freelance career.
In addition to the stage, he is also deeply committed to concert performances. He has frequently sung Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Mozart's Requiem, was a soloist in Shostakovich's Symphony No. 13, "Babi Yar," and has performed Schubert's "Winterreise" as a recitalist on several occasions.
On a more recent note we know he had wonderful roles in a Peer Gynt adaptation by Jüri Reinvere, Estonian born and 2025 award winning composer in Germany.
As Ulrich wrote in his own IG feed "I’m truly delighted for Jüri Reinvere on receiving the Opus Klassik award as Composer of the Year 2025. It was a very special joy and honor for me to portray the Troll King, Eberkopf, Dr. Begriffenfeldt, and the Gravedigger in his Peer Gynt. A relevant piece for our time!!! An important musician and poet! "Imagine this magic: you pour everything you’re good at into a cauldron, and out foams pure gold, purified through your own blood!"""
